RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The number of pedestrian fatalities in Richmond, Virginia more than doubled last year, reaching a record 11 deaths. Richmond law enforcement officials say pedestrian impairment and distraction may have played a role.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch quotes authorities as saying alcohol or drugs were found in pedestrians in at least four of the 11 fatalities. Richmond police Sgt. B.H. “Ike” Eikerenkoetter Jr. says pedestrians appeared to have improperly crossed or not had the right of way in all but one incident.
But that may not always be the pedestrian’s fault. The sergeant says he attempted to cross an intersection where a man died and barely made it across in the allotted time. Department of Public Works spokeswoman Sharon North says it doesn’t have enough funding to address all the infrastructure needs.
