SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - University of South Carolina Upstate has fired its athletic director amid a harassment investigation.

The Herald-Journal reports university Chancellor Brendan Kelly fired athletic director Julio Freire on Thursday. Documents the Herald-Journal obtained say women’s volleyball coach Jennifer Calloway wrote Kelly a letter accusing Freire of harassing her with comments that “were sexual in nature.”

Men’s head basketball coach Kyle Perry was also fired. Perry went 7-25 in his only season.

State Sen. Scott Talley, a Spartanburg attorney, represents Calloway and Perry and says they are evaluating their next steps.

Freire says he had not been contacted as part of any investigation. He told the newspaper the allegations are false.

Kelly said the terminations were an effort to put USC Upstate athletics “in the best position possible to be successful.”
