MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - State Sen. Harri Anne Smith of Slocomb is retiring after 20 years in the Alabama Senate.

Smith, a five-term member of the Senate, announced Tuesday that she will not seek re-election in November. She was elected three times as a Republican and twice as an independent.

Smith said Tuesday that she wants to focus on her husband who has been ill with cancer.

She joins 10 other senators, including several longtime incumbents, in the 35-member Alabama Senate who are not seeking re-election this year.

Senators who are not seeking re-election include nine-term incumbent Sen. Hank Sanders of Selma, budget chairman Sen. Trip Pittman of Montrose and Lineville Sen. Gerald Dial who has served 10 combined terms in the House and Senate.
