PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A tragic disease is one of the leading causes of death in the state.

The Alzheimer’s Association reports the disease is the fifth leading cost of death in Rhode Island, up from sixth in 2013.

Over 23,000 residents are currently living with the disease, with an expected increase of 4,000 in the next seven years.

The estimated Medicaid cost for Rhode Islanders with dementia and Alzheimer’s over the age of 65 in 2018 is $438 million.

That figure is expected to balloon by over 26 percent by 2025.

The group says that 53,000 caregivers in the state provided a total of 61 million hours in unpaid care.
