SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) - A hiker who fell 500 feet down a Southern California mountain was rescued by a helicopter crew and hospitalized for treatment of major injuries.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department says the 29-year-old woman slipped on ice Sunday while hiking the San Bernardino Peak Divide Trail. She struck several boulders before coming to a stop at the base of a tree.

Companions called 911 and a sheriff’s patrol helicopter located the victim at an elevation of 9,400 feet (2,865 meters) surrounded by ice and snow.

A rescue helicopter was called in and hoisted the victim off the mountain.
