PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Police say a man has died after he was ejected from a vehicle during a crash following a police pursuit.

Forty-seven-year-old David Johnson was a passenger in a car that drove away from police after being stopped for speeding on Route 6 Tuesday night.

Johnston police say the vehicle, driven by 47-year-old Alpha Williams, sped away after an officer attempted to conduct procedural checks. Johnson died at Rhode Island Hospital.

Police followed the vehicle into Providence and when it attempted to take an off-ramp, it crashed.

Williams is charged with driving without a license and eluding a police officer, and must appear in Kent County District Court Monday.

The crash remains under investigation.
