APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say one person is dead and 11 others injured after a freeway crash in Apache Junction.

Arizona Department of Public Safety officials say the accident happened around 6:30 p.m. Saturday on U.S. 60 when a car struck a large van with 13 people inside from behind.

The female passenger in the car was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

DPS officials say 10 of the 13 people inside the van were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The names of the woman killed and the 11 injured haven’t been released.

Authorities say they believe excessive speed may have been a factor in the fatal crash.
