SHAFTSBURY, Vt. (AP) - Police say a Vermont driver went off the road over the weekend and died in the crash.

Police say the crash took place around 7 a.m. Sunday in Shaftsbury. WPTZ-TV reports the driver of the car, 27-year-old Shelby Coon of Bennington, was driving northbound when the car went off the shoulder and crashed into a tree.

Authorities pronounced Coon dead at the scene. Vermont State Police say they are still investigating, but say they believe speed was a contributing factor.

The driver was wearing a seatbelt during the crash. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
