HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - Police in New Jersey say an intoxicated driver crashed into a police officer’s cruiser at a traffic post, sending the officer to the hospital.

Officer Leo Rudolph was diverting traffic in his vehicle with his emergency lights on Friday night in Hamilton Township, when a driver failed to yield and crashed into Rudolph’s cruiser. The Press of Atlantic City reports Rudolph was seriously injured and the car badly damaged.

The driver, a North Carolina man, was uninjured and has been charged with reckless driving and driving while intoxicated, among other charges. Police say further charges are pending.

In 2008, Rudolph was awarded an exceptional service award by the Hamilton Township Police Department.
