ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Maryland’s highest court will restore police officers’ names to a public database following an outcry over their recent removal.
The Baltimore Sun reported that the Maryland Court of Appeals made its decision Tuesday at an emergency meeting in Annapolis.
Alan Wilner, who chairs the committee responsible for the change, said it was an unintended mistake. He said the committee intended to replace officers’ first names with an initial in an effort to address privacy concerns. But entire names were removed from the searchable database last week.
The change was made just weeks after a federal trial for two former Baltimore police officers, which offered troubling testimony on police corruption.
The database is an essential tool for the public. It contains various details of a case, including the police officers involved.
