SUMTER, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say the mother of an elementary school student has been arrested after she shoved two teachers to slap a 7-year-old girl in the face who her daughter said threw pencils at her.

Sumter Police spokeswoman Tonyia McGirt says 29-year-old Cheneathia (SHUH’-nee-thee-ah) Caesar went inside Kingsbury Elementary School around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday and began yelling at a girl.

McGirt says two teachers tried to stop Caesar, but she pushed them, knocking one of them down, before hitting the child.

McGirt said in a statement an off-duty officer at the school then arrested her. She is charged with disturbing schools and three counts of assault and battery. It wasn’t known if she had a lawyer.
