DEXTER, Maine (AP) - Police say a man accused of stealing a police cruiser has been seriously injured in a car crash involving a different vehicle.

Police say the cruiser was stolen from the Dexter Police Department by 22-year-old Tyler Tibbetts on Friday.

They say he later crashed a different car into trees while being chased by police. He was being transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center Friday afternoon.

The cruiser that was stolen was fully marked. Police said it was found abandoned in Garland, east of Dexter, about 90 minutes after the theft, but there was no sign of Tibbetts at the time.
