Cleveland Cavaliers point guard George Hill missed the team’s practice Saturday for an unusual but praiseworthy reason.

Hill graduated college, receiving his diploma from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, where he played his college ball last decade.

Hill, 32, earned his diploma from IUPUI’s School of Liberal Arts and addressed students at the university’s commencement Saturday.

“I can tell you, not even the NBA Eastern Conference Finals could’ve kept me from enjoying this moment, to experience this with you guys today,” Hill told the audience of students and their families.

The Cavaliers have had five days between games and held a final practice Saturday before Sunday’s Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Boston Celtics. Hill will re-join his team in Boston in time to play in Game 1.

Hill called the degree “a big stepping stone in my life.”
