SHELBURNE, Vt. (AP) - A part-time Vermont police officer has pleaded not guilty to soliciting prostitution and obstruction of justice charges.

Fifty-seven-year-old Lynn Doney (DOUGH-knee) of Northfield was in court on Thursday. He is on administrative leave as an officer for Barre town and the Washington County sheriff’s office. He also serves on the Northfield select board.

Doney was charged after a motel manager in Shelburne reported suspicious activity and police said they identified a man who acknowledged he had been paid to perform sexual acts.

WCAX-TV reports that court papers show that Doney had a long friendship with the man. He told police they’ve had a physical relationship for at least the last four years and that he gave him money to pay his rent, not in exchange for sex.
