NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Police in New Jersey have released photos of three people sought in an attempted carjacking foiled by an off-duty police officer who fired at the suspects.

Newark police say the officer was waiting in the drive-through line at a fast food restaurant just after 10 p.m. Thursday when he saw what he believed was an attempted carjacking in the parking lot.

Essex County prosecutors say he got out of his vehicle, identified himself and tried to intervene, firing at the suspects. Police say the three apparently weren’t hit and fled.

Police are asking anyone with information about the three people shown in surveillance photos to call investigators.
