MARSHALL, N.C. (AP) - A longtime North Carolina court bookkeeper has been found guilty of attempted embezzlement.
The Asheville Citizen-Times reports Madison County District Attorney Seth Banks said 43-year-old Tara Nix of Hot Springs was the target of an investigation by the North Carolina Administrative Office of the Courts and the State Bureau of Investigation.
Nix, a bookkeeper with the Madison County Clerk of Superior Court office, was arrested last May. Court clerk Mark Cody said an investigation launched after she was fired showed Nix had misappropriated approximately $108,000.
Nix was sentenced on April 23 to between 51 and 75 months in prison. She was also ordered to pay restitution and court costs totaling more than $112,000, and required to forfeit her state retirement and pay $39,000 toward restitution from accrued retirement benefits.
