BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) - State law enforcement agents are investigating after a 60-year-old Billings man reportedly exchanged gunfire with two probation officers who were conducting a routine check.

The state Division of Criminal Investigation says the officers arrived at Michael Jeffrey Anderson’s residence Tuesday and were met with gunfire. Officers returned fire and escaped uninjured.

Anderson barricaded himself in his residence for about two hours before officers took him into custody. He was injured at some point and remained hospitalized Wednesday in stable condition.

State officials say Anderson is on probation for a 2007 conviction for assault with a weapon and has a 2009 federal conviction for possessing a machine gun.

The probation and parole officers are on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.

Billings Police Chief Rich St. John asked state agents to investigate.
