Right-handed pitcher Erick Fedde, who made his big league debut last season for Washington, was called up from Triple-A Syracuse to start for the Nationals on Wednesday at home against the San Diego Padres.
The game was set to begin at 4:05 p.m. as the last contest of a three-game homestand for Washington. After the game, the Nationals were slated to fly to Miami, where they begin a series against the Marlins on Friday with Max Scherzer (7-1) on the mound.
Fedde, 25, makes his first big-league start this year after going 1-1 with a 4.35 ERA in eight starts for Syracuse. In his last start for the Chiefs, he went a season-high 6.2 innings on Friday and gave up an unearned run and just four hits.
The Las Vegas product made three starts last season for Washington and began this year as the No. 3 prospect in the system according to Baseball America.
To make room for Fedde on the 25-man roster, right-handed reliever Carlos Torres, 35, was designated for assignment. He appeared in 10 games and gave up seven runs in 9.2 innings.
Outfield sensation Juan Soto, 19, who drew three walks Tuesday for the Nationals, moved from the No. 6 spot in the batting order to No. 2 on Wednesday against the Padres. He bats after Trea Turner and before Bryce Harper, who hit a homer Tuesday.
Harper has hit in the No. 2 hole the past few games after batting leadoff during a recent stretch.
The three walks by Soto were the most for a teenager since Harper drew three walks in 2012 against the Phillies. Soto hit his first big leaguer homer Monday and was 1-for-1 Tuesday with the walks.
Wednesday is Secret Service Day at Nationals Park.
Members of the U.S. Secret Service will be recognized before the game and special agent Ron Shurer of the U.S. Secret Service will present the lineup delivery introduction.
Ron Dermer, the Ambassador of Israel to the United States, was slated to throw out the first pitch.
The Nationals enter the game 26-21 while last-place San Diego is 20-30.
