MACOMB, Ill. (AP) - Western Illinois University is among the first U.S. colleges to offer a minor in stage combat.

The department of theatre and dance will begin offering the program this fall.

Department Chair Tammy Killian says performers who have the ability to act out conflicts in a way that’s safe and realistic “are a huge advantage” to professional theater companies. She says the intensive study will give WIU students a big advantage in the competitive theatre world.

Killian says WIU is believed to be only the second university in the country to offer the minor.

Students also will get the chance to earn skills proficiency certifications from the Society of American Fight Directors.

WIU is also hosting the Central Illinois Stage Combat Workshop, a partnership with Eureka College, this summer.
