BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP) - A Bellingham police officer has been fired following an arrest last year for allegedly assaulting two men near a business in Blaine.

The Bellingham Herald reports 32-year-old Sukhdev Dhaliwal was fired effective May 7 when allegations of misconduct were sustained during an internal investigation.

Dhaliwal was with the Bellingham Police Department since October 2015, and was a Whatcom County Jail deputy for about four years.

Dhaliwal his brother Jagmeet Singh Dhaliwal are accused of assaulting two men, a 19- and 20-year-old, over a family member’s relationship dispute.

Both men are facing charges of assault including strangulation. Their trials are tentatively scheduled for June.

Bellingham Police Chief David Doll says on Tuesday he rejected a grievance filed by the Bellingham Police Guild over the decision but they could pursue the matter through mediation or arbitration.
