WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) - The murder trial of a man charged with gunning down another man in a Massachusetts cemetery nearly three years ago is getting underway.

The Telegram & Gazette reports that testimony in the trial of 24-year-old Jose Lora is scheduled to begin Monday in Worcester Superior Court.

Authorities say Lora killed David Luyando in Worcester’s Hope Cemetery in June 2015 while the 22-year-old Luyando was visiting the gravesite of a friend who had been shot and killed outside city hall during a confrontation between rival gangs.

Luyando’s family said they discovered that the friend’s headstone was missing and they were waiting to file a stolen property report with police when a car pulled up and someone inside opened fire, killing Luyando.

Lora has claimed self-defense.

Jury selection started last week.
