BRANDON, Vt. (AP) - Vermont game wardens are remembering a colleague who was killed in the line of duty by a suspected deer poacher.
The monument to Warden Arnold Magoon, of Brandon, was dedicated last week at the home of Magoon’s family.
Magoon was the only Vermont game warden to be killed in the line of duty.
The Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife says Magoon responded to a gunshot the night of April 27, 1978. He was subsequently beaten to death with his flashlight.
A 24-year-old Brandon man was later convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to six to 20 years in prison.
Vermont Chief Game Warden Col. Jason Batchelder says Magoon is remembered for being dedicated, fair and professional and for serving as a role model for other wardens.
