PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence officials used an excavator to destroy over a dozen forfeited dirt bikes and all-terrain vehicles.

Seventeen vehicles were destroyed Monday morning at the public works building. City officials say they ruled out selling or donating the vehicles because they weren’t valuable.

Mayor Jorge Elorza said during a conference that the city is protecting its streets by taking action.

City council passed an ordinance last year banning ATVs and dirt bikes from Providence streets over safety concerns. Providence police have seized 46 recreational vehicles since the ordinance went into effect.
