HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - A mobile home development is planned on a South Carolina resort island.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reported a local resident wants to provide affordable housing options on the island.

The newspaper reported that Robert Chaneyfield wants to create eight mobile home lots on a 2.34-acre (1-hectare) lot.

Chaneyfield says the lots would start at $89,000. Those who buy the lots would have to bring in their own mobile homes. A real estate agent working with Chaneyfield says he’s encouraging new mobile homes.

The plan calls for a gravel road to access the lots, with water and sewer connections available.

The newspaper reported that the average cost of rental units in Beaufort County is similar to Charleston, Atlanta, Houston and Seattle.

Town staff members are reviewing the proposal.
