NORTH HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - A Connecticut woman whose barn exploded during a police standoff , killing one person and injuring nine police officers, is publicly thanking dozens of emergency responders.

Deborah Sayre thanked the police officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel and utility crews who responded to her North Haven home on May 2 in a letter sent to several newspapers in the state.

“Your families must truly be proud of you for you are our everyday heroes,” she wrote. “You are the ones rushing in when the rest of us are rushing away. We were relieved when we received the news that those that had been injured were being released from the hospital and that there were no fatalities.”

She also thanked a North Haven resident who set up a GoFundMe page that has raised about $4,000 to help her.

Authorities responded to the property after a woman called police to report that she had been held hostage and escaped. A regional SWAT team responded and encountered a barricaded man, believed to be Sayre’s husband, John Sayre. Officers negotiated with him for several hours before the barn exploded.

Police have not identified the woman or the person whose remains were found after the explosion and ensuing fire that destroyed much of the property. The medical examiner’s office is awaiting DNA test results that would confirm the person’s identity. Police were heard saying “Come out, John” over a bullhorn before the blast.

The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.

Officials said the woman wasn’t on the property at the time.

Deborah Sayre filed for divorce two weeks before the blast, checking a box on a form that said the marriage had “broken down irretrievably.” She has not returned messages seeking comment.
