IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Federal agents arrested eight people after a boat suspected of being used for smuggling came ashore south of San Diego.

Border Patrol spokesman Victor Pirro says a lifeguard spotted the boat the coming in Thursday morning near the pier in Imperial Beach.

Pirro says a group of people got off the 19-foot vessel and were detained a few blocks away.

The Los Angeles Times reports seven men and one woman - including two suspected smugglers - are in custody. The boat was seized.

Pirro says it was carrying multiple 10-gallon fuel tanks and all those aboard smelled of gasoline. There were no life vests.
