HARTWELL, Ga. (AP) - An animal rescue in Georgia says a small dog has been found dumped in a trash can at a highway welcome center.

News outlets report the Hart County Animal Rescue says the dog was “freezing, wet, hungry and scared” when plucked from the Interstate 85 trash can Tuesday morning. A shelter statement says the dog, which they’ve named Caroline, was rescued after someone heard her crying from inside the trash.

It says she was treated at an animal hospital and is now at the shelter. It says she needs to be spayed and receive other treatments before she can be adopted. It says she may up for adoption within two weeks.

The shelter asks for people with information on Caroline’s owner to contact it as she may have been stolen.
