COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Police say a man who was armed with a gun and threatening to kill himself died after shots were fired in a confrontation with officers responding to his central Ohio home.

Columbus police didn’t say who fired the shots during the Wednesday morning confrontation, and a department spokeswoman says that is under investigation. No one else was hurt.

Authorities had been called to the home by a family member who reported that the distraught man was armed and threatening to harm himself. Police say a confrontation occurred and the man, 52-year-old Billy Heeter, died at a hospital less than an hour later.

Police say a gun was recovered at the scene. They didn’t immediately share further details about what happened.
