ASBURY PARK, N.J. (AP) - Asbury Park officials are rethinking a waterfront redevelopment plan following criticism that the plan is outdated and doesn’t account for 16 years of growth and crowding.
Officials say a meeting has been scheduled for Friday between city officials and iStar, the Manhattan-based designated “master developer” under the Waterfront Redevelopment Plan. NJ.com reports the city council voted to demand iStar halt development work after a crowd of protestors turned out in opposition to several aspects of the plan.
As it stands, the redevelopment plan calls for replacing a stretch of boardwalk with a narrower walkway, and to create a paved lot over a gravel lot. Opponents argue the current plan would contribute to runoff pollution and would deprive the public of access to the ocean.
