A group of mostly Catholic and Protestant feminists have teamed up to publish “A Women’s Bible” for the #MeToo era.
The recent publication of “Une Bible des Femmes” has feminists from Geneva touting what they say is an answer to “lingering patriarchal readings” of the Bible. Theology professor Lauriane Savoy said for an interview published Tuesday that she helped allies spearhead the draft to tackle “completely outdated [ideas] with no relevance to today’s values of equality.”
“Feminist values and reading the Bible are not incompatible,” she told Agence France-Presse.
“We are fighting against a literal reading of the texts,” colleague Elisabeth Parmentier added. “[Elements of the Bible are] like taking a letter someone sends to give advice as being valid for all eternity. … Each chapter [of ‘A Women’s Bible’] addresses existential questions for women, questions they are still asking themselves today.”
The authors, along with 18 others from around the world, said they were inspired to write their book after reading a similar work — “The Women’s Bible” — from 1898.
