COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) - The sister of a soldier killed 68 years ago in the Korean War says she is glad to finally have his remains home and buried where they belong in the Georgia dirt.
Army Sgt. 1st Class James “Jimmy” Silas Streetman Jr.’s funeral was Saturday at Fort Benning with military honors.
The Ledger-Enquirer of Columbus reports Streetman was 20 years old when he was killed guarding the Kum River Line near the town of Taejon.
Streetman’s remains weren’t identified and he was buried at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Hawaii.
Sharon Streetman Ray says she and her mother submitted DNA samples in 2001 in hopes of finding her brother. It took advances in testing, but the Army notified her in September about her brother’s remains.
