JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi is naming a government office building for a former leader of the state House of Representatives.
Friends and former colleagues of the late House Speaker Tim Ford of Baldwyn gathered Wednesday in Jackson. They dedicated a plaque that will hang at the Mississippi Public Employees’ Retirement System building.
The PERS office near the Capitol is becoming the Timothy Alan “Tim” Ford Building. Legislators approved the designation in 2016, a year after he died at age 63.
Ford was elected as a Democrat to the Mississippi House in 1979 from a district in the Tupelo area. His colleagues in the 122-member House elected him as speaker in January 1988, and he remained in that role until January 2004. After leaving the Legislature, Ford went into private law practice.
