ODESSA, Texas (AP) - The U.S. Marshals Service says a federal detainee grabbed a correctional officer’s gun and killed himself at a West Texas hospital.

A statement by the Marshals Service says 26-year-old Andres Rios of Midland was detained at the Ector County Correctional Center in Odessa when he made a failed suicide attempt Sunday. He was taken to Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, where he overpowered a correctional officer on Monday, grabbed the officer’s handgun and shot himself.

The release says the incident is under investigation. There was no word on why Rios was under detention.



Odessa is about 330 miles (531 kilometers) west of Dallas.
