DIX HILLS, N.Y. (AP) - A waterproofing worker who got mired in mud in an 8-foot-deep hole is safe after rescue workers used a harness-and-pulley system to rescue him.
Authorities say Trevor Borders got trapped around 10:30 a.m. Friday at a residential property on Dix Hills, on Long Island.
The 22-year-old dug the hole to get access to the home’s basement. Then he started to sink.
Authorities say Borders tried to free himself but couldn’t and found himself trapped in mud up to his waist.
About 50 rescuers from local fire departments and emergency agencies came to Borders’ aid. He was freed around 1 p.m. and taken to a hospital for evaluation.
Dix Hills Fire Department spokesman Steve Silverman says Borders appeared to be in good condition.
