NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Federal prosecutors say a high-ranking street gang member who pleaded guilty to orchestrating one murder and participating in an attempted murder has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.

The U.S. attorney’s office in New Jersey says 31-year-old Rashan Washington pleaded guilty last year to murder, attempted murder and drug charges as part of a racketeering conspiracy.

Prosecutors said Washington was a member of the New Jersey set of the Grape Street Crips who was one of 14 defendants indicted in 2016.

They said Washington acknowledged having left a homicide victim alone in a vehicle when he knew another gang member was targeting him in November 2013. They said he also acknowledged responsibility for his role in an October 2013 shooting where gang members sought revenge for a colleague’s slaying.
