DOVER, Del. (AP) - A Delaware man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison in a drunken-driving crash that left a 10-year-old girl with a permanent brain injury.
News outlets report 39-year-old Oliver Barnes was sentenced Wednesday after pleading guilty to first-degree vehicular assault and misdemeanor DUI in the March accident that left Toni Dulin unable to walk, talk or eat on her own.
Court documents show Barnes’ own 13-year-old son had gotten out of the car before the crash, later telling officers he’d rather walk in the rain as his father was too drunk to drive.
Dulin’s mother, Adrianna Allen, was driving the car Barnes struck. She was treated for head and neck pain. Barnes himself suffered a spinal injury, and told hospital staff he had two bottles of Hennessy before driving.
