ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) - A man in Louisiana has rejected a plea deal in a wreck that killed a woman and her son.

The Alexandria Town Talk reported that 43-year-old John Henry Scott Jr. had been offered a deal of 25 years on each count of vehicular manslaughter in the deaths of 27-year-old Darlicia Smith and 6-year-old M’Kye Smith of Alexandria.

Rapides Parish Assistant District Attorney Kelvin Sanders said the sentences would have been served at the same time.

Police say Smith and her son died when Scott crashed into their vehicle on an Interstate 49 overpass in Alexandria in March. Another child was hurt.

Smith was charged in April after toxicology results were returned.

With his rejection of the plea deal, Scott is to stand trial March 11.
