CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - A former West Virginia law enforcement officer has pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI.
U.S. Attorney Mike Stuart says 52-year-old Robert Dwight Evans pleaded guilty Thursday in federal court. Evans is a former Kanawha County deputy.
The prosecutor’s office says in a news release that an FBI agent interviewed Evans in 2017 at his home near Charleston during an investigation of a drug trafficking ring. It says Evans denied purchasing opioid pain medication from a target of the investigation. It says he also claimed to have no knowledge of the target’s involvement in drug trafficking.
Stuart’s office said Evans resigned his position when he was confronted by a Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department internal investigation.
Sentencing is set for Feb. 13.
