TOMS RIVER, N.J. (AP) - A New Jersey township has purchased a local motel that police described as a crime magnet that generated 750 calls over a two-year period.

Toms River officials say they expect to knock down the Red Carpet Inn and use the site as a parking lot. The Asbury Park Press reports township officials plan to build a flood control berm at the property in the future.

Earlier this year, the Township Council agreed to bond $4.8 million to acquire the property and tear it down. The motel is vacant, and the township will now work to complete ongoing environmental reviews of the property before hiring a contractor to demolish the structure.
