AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine is using a lottery to give away four of its coveted scallop fishing licenses this year.
Scallops are among the most valuable marine resources in the state. They’re the subject of a tightly regulated fishery that takes place every winter and spring.
The Maine Department of Marine Resources says it’s collecting applications for the lottery until Oct. 26. Maine fishermen collect scallops by using dragger boats or by diving for them. The four licenses that are available are all licenses for draggers.
Maine’s scallop fishery collapsed in the mid-2000s, but has rebuilt to steady levels in recent years. The state’s meaty scallops are among its most beloved seafood items.
