ASHBURN — The Redskins released defensive lineman Anthony Lanier and signed defensive tackle Caleb Brantley on Monday, a source said.
Brantley, 24, was drafted in the sixth round by the Cleveland Browns in 2017, though was released on Saturday. The 6-foot-3, 307-pound tackle appeared in 12 games last season, recording 18 tackles and two sacks.
In April 2017, Brantley was charged with a misdemeanor battery for allegedly striking a woman’s face and knocking her unconscious. The case, however, was later dismissed due to “insufficient evidence to sustain a conviction.”
Brantley, who played college football at Florida, was initially projected to be a Day 2 prospect, but fell to the sixth round, in part because of character concerns.
An undrafted free agent in 2016, Lanier was a late developer, but became part of the Redskins’ defensive line rotation last season after being inactive for the first six games. He finished with five sacks in 2017 — two of which came against the Arizona Cardinals, a game in which he also had three pass deflections and a forced fumble.
Lanier was waived with an injury designation. He missed practice Sunday with a hip flexor strain.
