MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Memphis is planning to build a statue and a park in honor of former star player and coach Larry Finch.

University of Memphis President David Rudd announced in a statement Thursday that Larry Finch Memorial Park will be located on the school’s campus.

A committee is planning the project. A statue of the former All-American guard will be built at the park site, which has not been chosen.

Finch retired as the school’s leading scorer with 1,869 points. He currently ranks fourth.

Finch played from 1970 through 1973, when the school was named Memphis State. Finch scored 29 points in a memorable loss to UCLA in the NCAA championship game in 1973.

He later coached the Tigers from 1986 to 1997.

Finch died at age 60 in 2011.
