NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - A New Jersey man has admitted taking part in a food stamp scheme that allegedly also involved his mother and father.
Jose Perdomo of Newark pleaded guilty Thursday to one fraud count and one count of engaging in monetary transactions in property derived from specified unlawful activity.
The counts carry a maximum aggregate prison sentence of 30 years.
The U.S. attorney’s office says the 34-year-old Perdomo schemed with his parents, who ran a small grocery store in Newark that accepted Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.
The three allegedly exchanged $1.9 million in SNAP benefits illegally for cash.
Jose Perdomo’s father, Juan Perdomo, and his mother, Maria Rodriguez, also face federal charges. Their cases are pending.
Juan Perdomo’s attorney declined comment Thursday. Rodriguez’s attorney didn’t return an email message.
