SUMTER, S.C. (AP) - Morris College officially has new leadership in place.

The school celebrated the official naming of Dr. Leroy Staggers as its 10th president in a ceremony Friday. Staggers replaces Dr. Luns C. Richardson, who retired in 2017 after serving as president of the historically black, liberal arts college for 43 years. Richardson died in 2018. He was 89.

During the investiture ceremony, Staggers said he hoped to “build onto the great achievements of Dr. Richardson” who presided over the construction of 17 buildings and was instrumental in growing the school’s endowment from $30,000 to more than $12 million. Staggers also says he will work “diligently to keep students front and center, in all my decisions.”

Morris College is operated by the South Carolina Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention.
