GARDNERVILLE, Nev. (AP) - A Douglas County judge says he’ll impanel a grand jury to consider charges in the theft of $1 million worth of tires from the county in 2017 as long as the county pays for the investigation.
The Record-Courier reports Judge Tod Young sent a letter to county commissioners that says the probe could cost up to $100,000.
State agents investigated the case but no charges were filed.
The target of the investigation was Motor Pool Supervisor Chris Oakden, who was killed in a head-on collision in April 2017 on his way to speak with state investigators about the thefts. He was accused of purchasing tires that didn’t fit county vehicles and selling them to a variety of parties.
The attorney general’s office determined in December there was insufficient evidence to prove anyone other than Oakden committed any crimes.
