COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - Prosecutors say a Colorado Springs officer was justified when he shot and killed a man who rammed a stolen truck into a police cruiser and made threats with a hatchet.
The Gazette reports the officer was looking for stolen vehicles in an apartment complex parking lot when he came upon 48-year-old Bill Akes sleeping in a truck Jan. 12. The officer and a police sergeant who was called in as backup tried to arrest Akes, who started the truck and backed it into the cruiser.
The officer fired multiple shots when Akes raised a hatchet and threatened the sergeant. The El Paso County District Attorney’s Office determined that the officer “acted reasonably,” and no criminal charges will be filed.
An autopsy showed that Akes had methamphetamine in his system.
