FREMONT, Calif. (AP) - Police officers shot and killed a man in Northern California who authorities say randomly opened fire on a patrol vehicle.
Fremont Police Department Capt. Fred Bobbitt told KGO-TV that an officer was driving back to the police station late Thursday night when a man opened fire on the vehicle.
He said the officer made a U-turn and used his rifle to fire back at the suspect, who fell to the ground.
Bobbitt said two other officers who arrived at the scene saw the man crawling toward his gun and shot him again.
Authorities say they do not the man’s motivation but described the attack as an ambush.
The man’s identity was not immediately disclosed. No officers or suspects were hurt in the shooting that occurred near Washington Hospital in Fremont.
