SOUTHAVEN, Miss. (AP) - Police in a north Mississippi city say a man died after a medical emergency during a struggle with officers.

Local news outlets report police in Southaven noticed a man parked in the middle of Interstate 55 after 2 a.m. Saturday.

Officers say they stopped to check on the man and concluded that he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. They say he refused to get out of the vehicle and began struggling with officers.

The report filed by officers in the Memphis, Tennessee, suburb says that at some point during the struggle, the driver experienced “some type of medical emergency and then became unresponsive.”

The man, who hasn’t been identified, didn’t respond to resuscitation and was pronounced dead after he arrived at the emergency room of a nearby hospital.
