BANGOR, Maine (AP) - A woman who Maine State Police say killed a 2-year-old girl has been denied bail.

Prosecutors charge that 21-year-old Savannah Smith, of Bucksport, killed Kloe Hawksley in October 2017 with a blow to the girl’s abdomen.

Smith, who pleaded not guilty during the court appearance on Monday, was dating and living with Kloe’s father, Tyler Hawksley, when the girl died at their home in Bucksport. Assistant attorney general Leanne Robbin says Smith was the last adult with Kloe before she died.

Defense attorney Jeffrey Silverstein said Smith is disappointed about the bail denial.

He questioned the accuracy of the autopsy report prepared by Chief State Medical Examiner Mark Flomenbaum. Flomenbaum declined comment.
