DENVER (AP) - Lawyers say Colorado has agreed to pay $200,000 to an inmate who claimed two corrections officers used excessive force when they slammed him onto the ground.
The Denver Post reported Thursday that inmate Shawn Lovett filed a federal lawsuit in 2016 after the encounter in the Centennial Correctional Facility near Canon City left him bleeding and unconscious.
According to the lawsuit, Lovett was being escorted from his cell when an officer forced him to the ground.
Lovett’s lawyer, David Lane, says the state Department of Corrections fired one of the officers and the other was given probation for filing a false report about the encounter.
The officers do not admit to liability in the agreement.
Lane says Lovett remains incarcerated for sexual assault and robbery convictions.
